You’re Probably More Vulnerable Than You Think: 5 Cybersecurity Weaknesses Hackers Exploit

October marks Cybersecurity Awareness Month, but threat actors are aware of your security weaknesses 365 days a year. While technology advances at an astonishing rate, the majority of successful security breaches still stem from a fundamental issue: human error and unpreparedness.

Knowledge is power, and understanding your exposure is the crucial first step toward defense. Here are five often-overlooked vulnerabilities that hackers actively exploit when targeting companies:

1. Poorly Secured Email Environment

Business email remains the number one initial access point for hackers. Weak log-in credentials and authorization protocols make it easy for criminals to execute phishing schemes and steal sensitive information. These schemes often go unidentified when companies fail to invest in ongoing cybersecurity training, leading directly to crippling data breaches.

2. Overly Permissive Access Controls

This vulnerability, known as Poor Privilege and Access Management, occurs when employees have more system permissions or access to sensitive data than their job actually requires. If an attacker compromises a user account with excessive privileges, they can inflict significantly greater damage, compromising the entire network with ease.

3. Malware and Ransomware Susceptibility

Threat actors are adept at leveraging human error to their advantage. Malware or ransomware can be inadvertently installed by employees who mistakenly download a file or click on a malicious link. Once installed, these malicious programs are extremely difficult to combat, capable of immediately disrupting operations and often costing companies millions of dollars. Ongoing security training is vital to help employees recognize suspicious content and minimize this risk.

4. Shadow IT and Unmanaged Third-Party Tools

Shadow IT refers to any unauthorized applications, cloud storage, or personal devices used by employees without formal IT approval. These create critical security blind spots. Since IT doesn’t manage or monitor these tools, they often lack necessary security controls and can easily expose corporate data to the public internet or malicious actors.

5. Cloud Service Misconfigurations

While major cloud providers are inherently secure, the actual security configuration is often the customer’s responsibility (part of the “Shared Responsibility Model“). Simple mistakes, such as leaving a storage bucket publicly accessible or setting overly permissive user rules, can lead to massive, instantaneous data leaks.

Protect Your Business: This Month, and Every Month

If knowledge is power, then expertise is power with a plan. Knowing your vulnerabilities is an important step, but it’s only half the battle.  You need a clear strategy to address them.

This Cyber Security Awareness month, we invite you to take a positive, definitive step toward securing your business (and your clients) by scheduling a cyber risk assessment with our team of experts at NTG. We’ll help you understand where your key vulnerabilities are and provide actionable recommendations and services to identify, respond to, and safeguard against cyber threats.

We are not just IT support, we’re your partners in comprehensive cybersecurity.
